Tradescantia pallida ‘Purpurea’ (Purple heart)

The Tradescantia pallida ‘Purpurea’ is native to Mexico and is commonly called Purple Heart, Purple Secretia or Purple Queen. The Tradescantia pallida is a popular trailing evergreen perennial because of its amazing foliage. It has purple, narrow pointed leaves which grow to 5-12cm long and flowers with a delicate bright pinkish purple 3-petalled flower. Easily grown in rich, moist, well-draining soil in full sun to part shade. The Tradescantia pallida like full sun for good colouration of the leaves. Shelter from strong winds as it can break the fragile stems. Water freely in dry weather. This plant can be drought tolerant once established. This ground-hugging plant is ideal as a ground cover or even in a hanging basket where the foliage can trail down.
