Chlorophytum comosum (spider plant)
The Chlorophytum comosum Spider Plant (“Variegatum”) is a native plant to tropical and Southern Africa but has become naturalized in parts of Western Australia.
This flowering perennial has narrow arching green leaves with white margins (not to be confused with the C. comosum “Vittatum” which has mid-green leaves with a broad central white stripe) which can grow to approximately 20-40cm long and develops tiny white flowers in clusters of up to 6 flowers in varying intervals.
While these exceptionally hardy plants will survive in less than perfect conditions, in optimal environments they are stunning. Spider Plants prefer bright light and but may scorch in direct sunlight. However, they will grow in conditions ranging from semi-shady to partial direct sun. Water liberally through the summer. Mist occasionally. During winter, reduce watering and cut any dead foliage.
